A weekend of successes 19 November 2007
Club members returned from the recent Zuidland International Tournament in Holland yesterday with a lot to smile about. Ed Trudgell won Gold (under 90kgs), Joe Williams Bronze (under 100kgs), whilst Richard McDonald achieved 4th place (under 66kgs).
Despite this success the highlight of the weekend for Richard was hearing his sister Katrina being 'shushed' by an IJF referee!
At his first appearance at the Junior National Age-Band Championships in Sheffield - also last weekend - Tim-Philipp Ebel walked away with Bronzes having narrowly missed getting into the final when beaten by the eventual Gold medallist. Although this does not entitle him to a place on the Squad, it bodes well for future national recognition.

Croydon hosts world class Kata Coach 12 November 2007
Mr Iura's CV is truly extensive and he is an immensely informative teacher; he is currently based at the Japanese Embassy in Iceland. It was an extremely successful event, supported from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Israel, as well as many parts of England. This was Mr Iura's second visit to the club, and we look forward to seeing him again next year.

Club awarded the Jack Petchey 'Silver Award' 26 October 2007
Croydon Judo Club has been privileged to be offered a place in the Jack Petchey Foundation 'Silver Award' scheme. The scheme exists to celebrate the success of our young people, and to provide funding for the work of the club.
Each quarter a young person from the club (aged between 11 and 25 years) is nominated to received an award. In addition to the framed certificates (presented each quarter) and achievement medallions (presented annually to the winners) the club also receives a cheque for £600!
The
are several key elements to the scheme which will involve all club
members; the award winners will choose what the money should be spent on
(but before any one suggests it, it can't be spent on sweets from the
tuck shop!), and once a year members will get the chance to nominate an
adult (coach, volunteers, etc.) that has made a significant contribution
to the club - this attracts a grant of a further £1,000 that can be
spent on the club or a community project.
Those of us involved are VERY excited that our young people's achievements and contributions can be celebrated in this way - keep an eye out on the notice-board (and website) for more news about how YOU CAN BE INVOLVED.
The first award will be presented at our annual club championship on the 16th December (see our events page)

Gray Matter! 25 October 2007 Enormous thanks go to Ashley Gray - former Webmaster of the club. Ashley has handed over the day-to-day maintenance of the website after many years of volunteering. He remains an excellent 'consultant', and is still brimming with ideas we fully intend on exploiting. Along with our thanks go our best wishes as he takes on new ventures! Over the coming weeks and months we plan on adding new content as well as providing up to date news of events and the achievements and news of our members ... so keep visiting!

Millennium League 2007 7 October 2007 Croydon Judo Club's junior players racked up an impressive 13 medals at the 3rd and final round of the Surrey Millennium League. Our players put on some impressive Judo, but it was not enough to hold on to 1st place and take the title, and we ended the year in 3rd position. The League Champions were Pyrford Judo Club, who pulled out their big guns for the finale; huge congratulations to Graham Hoptroff and his team. Our Juniors put on some fantastic judo and we are rightly proud them - roll on next year! For a full listing of our medallists click here

Croydon takes lead in county league 25 March 2007 Croydon Judo Club saw a wealth of medals awarded to its members at the recent ‘Surrey Millennium League’ second round competition, putting the club in a strong position to win the league title this year. The
local club – based in its new £1.5 million purpose built home on
Morland Avenue – saw 20 of its junior members competing, with 14
walking away with medals. For
some it was there first experience of competitive judo; and what an
experience! All
of the clubs coaches were pleased with the results and proud of all the
children that took part. “The children worked really hard, the level of judo shown
was excellent, and the variety of techniques on display was
impressive” said Alan Rikard, the Club Chairman; “the 6 gold, 2
silver and 6 bronze medals awarded reflect their efforts”. One
of the many highlights of the day was the final match of the in the boys
‘under 34kg’ category which saw two friends (and rivals!) compete
for top position. Tim-Philipp
Ebel and Tomas Luckus fought a gripping match, one which brought out the
best in both of them, but Tim-Philipp finally took the Gold with a
convincing Harai
Goshi throw
which gave him the winning score. The
club is now first in the Surrey Millennium League and will need to work
hard to ensure the trophy has pride of place at their training centre at
the end of the year.

Grand
Opening 29
January 2006
The day we all thought would never come!
Well it did come and what a grand day it was. We were graced by the presence of many friends, old and new, Stuart Collins - a former mayor of Croydon and many BJA County, Area and National representatives including BJA Chairman, Densign White. Almost one hundred judoka took to the mat for our first mass randoori session led by Densign depsite having a croaky voice. However that didn't matter as our new 'dojo address system' with its headset microphone worked a treat with everyone clearly hearing every word of Densign's advice and the occasional groan of his uke.

Clubmark Award 6 July 2005 The
Club has been awarded The Sport England Clubmark which is a prestigious
kitemark to recognise that we are a quality sports club. Players, parents, schools, local authorities and other
agencies can have confidence in the way in which the Club is run and
carries out its activities. We
are the first Judo club is Surrey to receive this award and one of only
a handful in the south. Only
a thousand Sport England Clubmarks have been awarded countrywide across
all the sports. The Club has also earned a Bronze Recognition Award by the British Judo Association to acknowledge the high standards achieved by the club in the promotion and delivery of judo. These two awards were presented at a Croydon Sportlink meeting by former Mayor of Croydon, Stuart Collins, to Alan and Sheila on the day the successful bid for the 2012 Olympics was announced. Alan said ‘This is a great honour for our Club, which has worked hard to ensure that high standards are achieved by its members whether fighting in competition or assisting in organising tournaments. We have one player training hard for Olympic qualification and several young referees and scorers who we hope will be able to fully contribute to their sport at the London Olympics in 2012’ Alan asks that you make sure that you congratulate Sheila all her hard work in obtaining this award for the Club |

Millenium League Report 3 July 2005 On
Sunday 3rd July 2005, eleven junior players from the Club
gathered at Westcroft Leisure Centre for the second round of the Surrey
County Millennium League.
It
was an early start for all and the girls fought first and proved that
early starts don’t hold them back!
In
the under 40kilo category Elona Onyango fought extremely well and came
away with a bronze. Caroline Hillam also fought tremendously well and
won a silver medal in the under 52kilo category. The other two entries
were both in the over 57kilo category and had to fight each other, and
this time Louise Wilkinson claimed the gold and Emma Doherty the silver.
All the girls entered fought well and all won medals.
The
star player of the day had to be Ben Fisher. In the very competitive
under 38kilo category, he won all his fights with the maximum score of
ippon. This is an excellent result and he fought exceptionally well
using skill and tactics to beat his opponents. Arun Butler in the under
24kilo category also fought well to claim silver medal, he too is one to
watch for the future. In the under 60kilo category Matt Putner won
silver in one of his first competitions and beat some tough opposition.
Other
members taking part were Matt Fisher and Lee Chappell, both fought well
to reach the repecharge of their tough weight groups, Alexander
Kleanthous and Anthony Young who were also in strong weight groups.
This
was a very good medal haul for the club as seven of the eleven members
entered won medals and this will help maintain the club’s third
position in the League. Report

|
New Dojo November 2004 Nobody really believes the official information that the new dojo will be completed by September 2005 given that the site at Morland Avenue is still locked and derelict. This is however what the contractors have advised Alan but its difficult to appreciate whether the date can be met. |

Alan's Croydon Champions Award November 2004 Alan received the Croydon Champions award for culture at a gala reception last week. Alan has been running Croydon Judo Club for the past 32 years and during that time he has transformed the club, once on the brink of closing, into a thriving institution and it was for this and his contribution to running Surrey County judo as well as international refereeing that Alan deservedly won.
Alan says of his award: "It was a real surprise, I didn't expect to get it. The other people were so good that were up for it. It was a fantastic evening." |
|
Croydon Judo Club at Athens Olympics August 2004 Kat, Nic, Danny and Rebecca all met up in Athens to support the British judo players at the Ano Lossia judo hall. There were also many other British supporters but they all couldn't match the fanatical Japanese in noise (surprising that!) or weird costumes. Kat says "Just being there to witness the events at first hand was incredible but it's a pity we couldn't have had the mega medal party that we all hoped for" |
